THE PURPLE COUCH

The Purple Couch began with the belief that what matters most in life was being drowned out by things that didn’t really matter at all. We believed that other people, like us, were also seeking this truth. But, all too often we couldn’t seem to find it. The answer to where the truth was hidden came when we posed the question, “What was a defining moment in your life?” to a group of friends in our living room. It was at that moment we knew exactly what we needed to do.

While we had known some of our friends for over fifteen y

ears their answers that night still surprised and astounded us. We wanted to hear more stories–stories from as many people as we could. We knew that the truth we were seeking would be found in these stories. And, since the people couldn’t come to our living room we decided to bring the living room to the people. The Purple Couch was born.

The Purple Couch is on a quest throughout America’s “living room” (anywhere the couch lands) seeking to be a platform for the truth about what matters, a platform for the people to speak and be heard. We believe that there is power in our

stories–the power that comes with understanding. And, when it finally dawns on us that we have much in more common than that which sets us apart, we will begin to heal as a country and a planet.

Producer, singer, songwriter, rock n’roll guitar player & indie label entrepreneur: Neil Leyton is a mainstay in the Toronto music scene. Originally frontman for Toronto’s glam godfathers The Conscience Pilate, in 1998 Leyton embarked on a solo career with the release of the critically acclaimed “Secret Avenue” album. His first single and video, “fires of the heart”, aired on MuchMusic that Summer.

Originally a business front for The Conscience Pilate, Neil’s label Fading Ways Music has grown into a full-fledged independent label with national distribution in Canada (Scratch) as well as overseas. Oakland Records USA is a vehicle for the independent music artist. Tom "Tommy" Held (our founder) set up Oakland Records at the start of this millenium. His goal was to take his and other's expertise in the music industry and combine all of it to create a comprehensive and affordable consulting service to new artists.

Tommy has over 20 years experience in the music industry as producer, engineer, and consultant for Platinum and Grammy Award winning artists including Arrested Development and The Bo Deans as well as Hip Hop artists Kali Tribe, Roots Rock artists The Flood and High Water Limit and many more. He has also worked with prestigious classical artists and composers such as John Downey, Pavel Burda, Leonard Salzedo, John Welstead and Yahuda Yannay. He has worked with Jazz artist Spinn Jive, songwriter Jimmy Pierce and many, many more.
